Chapter 12: States of Matter —
अध्याय 12: पदार्थ की अवस्थाएँ
1. Matter — पदार्थ
Definition
English: Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
Hindi: जिस किसी वस्तु का द्रव्यमान (Mass) होता है और जो स्थान घेरती है, उसे पदार्थ (Matter) कहते हैं।
Examples
Book — किताब
Table — मेज
Water — पानी
Air — वायु
Milk — दूध
Stone — पत्थर
Important Point
Matter is made up of very tiny particles called atoms and molecules.
पदार्थ बहुत छोटे-छोटे कणों से बना होता है, जिन्हें परमाणु (Atoms) और अणु (Molecules) कहते हैं।
2. Atoms and Molecules — परमाणु और अणु
Atom
English: An atom is a very tiny particle of an element.
Hindi: परमाणु किसी तत्व का बहुत छोटा कण होता है।
Molecule
English: A molecule is a group of atoms joined together.
Hindi: दो या दो से अधिक परमाणुओं के आपस में जुड़ने से अणु बनता है।
Example
Water is made up of water molecules.
पानी जल के अणुओं से बना होता है।
Water molecule = H₂O
3. Volume — आयतन
Definition
English: The amount of space occupied by matter is called its volume.
Hindi: किसी पदार्थ द्वारा घेरे गए स्थान की मात्रा को उसका आयतन (Volume) कहते हैं।
Examples
A bottle occupies some space, so it has volume.
पानी से भरे गिलास में पानी कुछ स्थान घेरता है, इसलिए उसका आयतन होता है।
4. States of Matter — पदार्थ की अवस्थाएँ
Matter mainly exists in three states:
Solid — ठोस
Liquid — द्रव
Gas — गैस
Example of water
Ice → Water → Steam
Ice = Solid
Water = Liquid
Steam = Gas
5. Solids — ठोस पदार्थ
Definition
English: A solid has a definite shape and a definite volume.
Hindi: ठोस पदार्थ का निश्चित आकार और निश्चित आयतन होता है।
Examples
Pencil — पेंसिल
Book — किताब
Chair — कुर्सी
Brick — ईंट
Ice — बर्फ
Stone — पत्थर
Properties of Solids
1. Fixed shape — निश्चित आकार
A solid normally keeps its shape.
2. Fixed volume — निश्चित आयतन
A solid occupies a fixed amount of space.
3. Molecules are tightly packed — अणु बहुत पास-पास होते हैं।
4. Very little space between molecules — अणुओं के बीच बहुत कम खाली स्थान होता है।
5. Solids cannot flow — ठोस बह नहीं सकते।
6. Most solids are hard and cannot be easily compressed.
अधिकांश ठोस कठोर होते हैं और उन्हें आसानी से दबाया नहीं जा सकता।
Example
A pencil remains pencil-shaped whether it is kept on a table or inside a bag.
6. Arrangement of Molecules in Solids
ठोस में molecules बहुत closely packed होते हैं।
English: The molecules in a solid are very tightly packed and have very little space between them.
Hindi: ठोस के अणु बहुत सघन रूप से व्यवस्थित होते हैं और उनके बीच बहुत कम खाली स्थान होता है।
Activity: Marbles
यदि बहुत सारी गोलियाँ (marbles) एक जार में भर दी जाएँ, तो वे बहुत कसकर packed हो जाती हैं और स्वतंत्र रूप से नहीं घूम पातीं।
Conclusion:
Solid के molecules भी इसी तरह tightly packed होते हैं।
7. Liquids — द्रव
Definition
English: A liquid has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape.
Hindi: द्रव का निश्चित आयतन होता है, लेकिन निश्चित आकार नहीं होता।
Examples
Water — पानी
Milk — दूध
Oil — तेल
Juice — जूस
Properties of Liquids
Fixed volume — निश्चित आयतन
No fixed shape — निश्चित आकार नहीं
Can flow — बह सकते हैं
Molecules are less tightly packed than solids.
There is some space between liquid molecules.
Example
जब पानी को गिलास में डालते हैं तो वह गिलास का आकार ले लेता है।
जब उसी पानी को कटोरे में डालते हैं तो वह कटोरे का आकार ले लेता है।
इसलिए liquid का अपना fixed shape नहीं होता।
8. Arrangement of Molecules in Liquids
English: Molecules in a liquid are less tightly packed than those in a solid.
Hindi: द्रव के अणु ठोस की तुलना में कम सघन रूप से packed होते हैं।
इस कारण molecules एक-दूसरे के आसपास move कर सकते हैं और liquid flow कर सकता है।
Important
Liquid का:
Volume fixed होता है।
Shape fixed नहीं होता।
9. Gases — गैस
Definition
English: A gas has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.
Hindi: गैस का निश्चित आकार और निश्चित आयतन दोनों नहीं होते।
Examples
Air — वायु
Oxygen — ऑक्सीजन
Carbon dioxide — कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड
Water vapour — जलवाष्प
Steam — भाप
Properties of Gases
No fixed shape — निश्चित आकार नहीं
No fixed volume — निश्चित आयतन नहीं
Can flow easily — आसानी से बह/फैल सकती हैं
Molecules are loosely packed.
There are large spaces between molecules.
Molecules move freely.
Example
एक कमरे में अगर perfume या room freshener छिड़का जाए, तो उसकी smell धीरे-धीरे पूरे कमरे में फैल जाती है।
Reason: Gas molecules freely move and spread into available space.
10. Arrangement of Molecules in Gas
Gas में molecules के बीच बहुत अधिक खाली स्थान होता है।
Solid: Molecules very close
Liquid: Molecules somewhat apart
Gas: Molecules very far apart
याद रखने की Trick
Solid → Tight
Liquid → Loose
Gas → Very Loose
11. Comparison of Three States of Matter
| Property | Solid (ठोस) | Liquid (द्रव) | Gas (गैस) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | Fixed | Not fixed | Not fixed |
| Volume | Fixed | Fixed | Not fixed |
| Molecules | Very tightly packed | Less tightly packed | Loosely packed |
| Space | Very little | Some | Large |
| Movement | Very limited | Can move | Move freely |
| Flow | Cannot flow | Can flow | Can flow easily |
Short Formula
Solid = Fixed Shape + Fixed Volume
Liquid = No Fixed Shape + Fixed Volume
Gas = No Fixed Shape + No Fixed Volume
12. Brownian Motion — ब्राउनियन गति
Definition
English: The random movement of tiny particles suspended in a fluid is called Brownian motion.
Hindi: किसी द्रव में उपस्थित बहुत छोटे कणों की अनियमित या यादृच्छिक गति को ब्राउनियन गति (Brownian Motion) कहते हैं।
Robert Brown
Robert Brown एक Scottish scientist थे।
उन्होंने पानी में pollen grains डालकर देखा कि pollen grains random movement कर रहे थे।
इसी movement को बाद में Brownian motion कहा गया।
Example
पानी में pollen grains का लगातार random movement.
13. Changes in States of Matter — पदार्थ की अवस्था में परिवर्तन
Matter अपनी अवस्था बदल सकता है।
यह परिवर्तन मुख्य रूप से heating (गर्म करने) या cooling (ठंडा करने) से होता है।
Important
These changes are generally reversible.
Hindi: ये परिवर्तन सामान्यतः उत्क्रमणीय होते हैं, अर्थात पदार्थ को वापस उसकी मूल अवस्था में लाया जा सकता है।
14. Freezing — जमना
Definition
English: The change of a liquid into a solid on cooling is called freezing.
Hindi: ठंडा करने पर द्रव का ठोस में बदलना Freezing (जमना) कहलाता है।
Example
Water → Ice
पानी को freezer में रखने पर वह बर्फ बन जाता है।
Another Example
Milk mixture से ice cream बनना भी freezing का उदाहरण है।
15. Melting — पिघलना
Definition
English: The change of a solid into a liquid on heating is called melting.
Hindi: गर्म करने पर ठोस का द्रव में बदलना Melting (पिघलना) कहलाता है।
Example
Ice → Water
बर्फ को कमरे के तापमान पर रखने पर वह पिघलकर पानी बन जाती है।
Another Example
Ice cream का गर्म वातावरण में पिघलना।
16. Vaporisation — वाष्पीकरण
Definition
English: The process by which a liquid changes into its gaseous form is called vaporisation.
Hindi: द्रव के गैसीय अवस्था में बदलने की प्रक्रिया को Vaporisation (वाष्पीकरण) कहते हैं।
Example
Water → Water vapour/Steam
पानी को गर्म करने पर वह जलवाष्प या steam में बदल जाता है।
17. Condensation — संघनन
Definition
English: The change of a gas into a liquid on cooling is called condensation.
Hindi: ठंडा करने पर गैस का द्रव में बदलना Condensation (संघनन) कहलाता है।
Example
Water vapour → Water droplets
गर्म जलवाष्प जब ठंडी plate से टकराती है तो पानी की बूंदों में बदल जाती है।
Daily-life Example
ठंडे पानी की bottle के बाहर पानी की बूंदें दिखाई देना।
18. Sublimation — ऊर्ध्वपातन
Definition
English: The direct change of a solid into a gas without changing into liquid is called sublimation.
Hindi: किसी ठोस का बिना द्रव अवस्था में बदले सीधे गैस में बदलना Sublimation (ऊर्ध्वपातन) कहलाता है।
Examples
Camphor — कपूर
Naphthalene balls — नेफ़्थलीन की गोलियाँ
Solid → Gas
Reverse Process
Gas → Solid = Deposition
19. Deposition — निक्षेपण
Definition
English: The direct change of a gas into a solid without passing through the liquid state is called deposition.
Hindi: गैस का बिना द्रव अवस्था से गुजरे सीधे ठोस में बदलना Deposition (निक्षेपण) कहलाता है।
Example
कुछ परिस्थितियों में water vapour का सीधे ice में बदलना।

21. Solution — विलयन
Definition
English: A solution is a mixture obtained when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
Hindi: जब कोई विलेय (Solute), विलायक (Solvent) में घुल जाता है, तो बने हुए मिश्रण को Solution (विलयन) कहते हैं।
Example
Sugar + Water = Sugar solution
चीनी + पानी = चीनी का घोल
22. Solute — विलेय

24. Soluble Substances — घुलनशील पदार्थ
Definition
English: Substances that dissolve in water are called soluble substances.
Hindi: वे पदार्थ जो पानी में घुल जाते हैं, घुलनशील पदार्थ (Soluble substances) कहलाते हैं।
Examples

25. Insoluble Substances — अघुलनशील पदार्थ
Definition
English: Substances that do not dissolve in water are called insoluble substances.
Hindi: वे पदार्थ जो पानी में नहीं घुलते, अघुलनशील पदार्थ (Insoluble substances) कहलाते हैं।
Examples
Sand — रेत
Mud — मिट्टी
Chalk — चॉक
Sand + Water → Sand does not dissolve
26. Why does Sugar Disappear in Water?
जब चीनी को पानी में मिलाकर हिलाते हैं, तो चीनी के particles पानी के molecules के बीच मौजूद spaces में चले जाते हैं।
इसलिए:
चीनी दिखाई नहीं देती।
पानी का level बहुत अधिक नहीं बढ़ता।
लेकिन चीनी पानी में मौजूद रहती है।
Important Concept
Dissolving does not mean that the substance disappears.
घुलने का अर्थ यह नहीं है कि पदार्थ समाप्त हो गया।
27. Space Between Molecules
यह chapter का बहुत महत्वपूर्ण concept है।
Solid
Molecules के बीच बहुत कम space.
Liquid
Molecules के बीच कुछ space.
Gas
Molecules के बीच बहुत अधिक space.
Increasing order of space
Solid < Liquid < Gas
उदाहरण:
Table < Milk < Air
और
Paper < Oil < Smoke
28. Important Activities and Conclusions
Activity 1: Marbles
Observation: Marbles tightly packed होने के कारण freely move नहीं करतीं।
Conclusion: Solids के molecules tightly packed होते हैं।
Activity 2: Water in Different Containers
Observation: पानी glass और bowl के अनुसार अपना shape बदल लेता है।
Conclusion: Liquid का fixed shape नहीं होता, लेकिन fixed volume होता है।
Activity 3: Smoke
Observation: Smoke को हाथ में पकड़ नहीं सकते और वह bottle में फैल जाती है।
